Few football matches are still spoken about decades after the final siren.  The 1978 SANFL grand final is one such match because of the profound effect it had on players, fans and administrators alike. While the records show that Norwood defeated Sturt by one point, 16-15 to 14-26 there is so much more to this story than what happened on the field on grand final day.

For Sturt, who were overwhelming favourites the 1978 the loss to Norwood was devastating. Some at the Unley club still suffer pain to this day. For the Redlegs the game was a moment of triumph and one where the Blues' psychological ascendancy was at last destroyed.

The Story of 78 provides a vivid account of one of the most remarkable matches in football history together with an analysis of its aftermath. This special 30th anniversary edition features an update on the two clubs and an examination into the role the SANFL now plays in the broader football community. It also includes additional photos from the match and a foreword by former Sturt champion Jim Derrington. Featuring insights by key personnel from both clubs, this is a thought provoking and engaging addition to the literature of football in Australia.
